Back to School Name Activity
Submitted by Carrie (via Donna) (10-10-2012)
I love teaching with kiddies names. They get so much out of it and really feel part of the class. We just started school, and I feature 1 student a day. I write their name on a sentence strip (they are spelling it for me), we all say the letters and the name.
Next I cut the letters apart (everyone goes "ooooohh", I ask if student will be able to put their name together. They go to the pocket chart and re-build their name. They love it. Student comes back and we cheer each letter in the name and say the name at the end, 3 times.
Then I ask the student their age, favorite color, favorite food, pets, favorite play at home, favorite activity at school. I then draw a picture of the student, (saying) including all details.
Kiddies then go to illustrate a picture of the student doing 1 favorite thing (could also write about the favorite thing depending on age). Featured student designs the cover to their book. Yes, all the pages are put together to make a book for the student to take home the same day. I make up a small version of the student information to glue to the back side of their cover. Show the book at the end of the day.
They each love seeing their picture, comments from me or the featured student. Student loves taking their book home. Everyone feels great and part of a wonderful class. I also send home the chart paper (small chart paper) for student to read to their family.
That's the first round and it will take about 5 weeks.
Love name activities and do lots of them.
Students learn words and letter sounds.

What others are saying...
Hi all
I also have been doing this for many years now. If you Google "Star of the day" you will find all the information you need on this idea. It is great for literacy, discussing smaller words in bigger words, word families etc. it is great for prep/reception children. The kids just love it.
