August Book Week

by Marg
(South Australia country)

I thought for Book week it would be lovely to read stories from around the globe and have a passport to stamp just not sure if there are any stamps out there for different countries - or does anyone have any suggestions.

Of my new little group a couple are really interested in a poster I had laying around of maps from around the world, so thought I could include that as we focus on each story.

Any Ideas gratefully received

Stickers are easy to make using address labels.
Either use the coat of arms or flag of each country or an animal and copy-and-paste onto an address label sheet. Print out a sheet for each country and peel off and stick in as the children 'visit' that country.

Hi,
I direct a large daycare for our school system in Michigan, USA. We did a "Children Around the World" theme this summer, visiting several countries! As part of that experience, they received passport stamps for each country, which I purchased online a few weeks prior. I don't have the address at the moment, but it was very easy to google and search for International Flag stickers. Ours came fifty to a sheet and the cost was $2.50 dollars per sheet. The children loved having them as part of their summer curriculum. The age groups involved were 5 - 10 years.

The same site also sold nylon flags for each country, and for the states of the USA also - size approx 18in x 9 in $2.95 per flag. Great for display! Good Luck!

Sparklebox have a Passport Template for use. I just copied the Australian Coat of Arms onto copy.

Thankyou so much for all your comments - now have to decide!! I will use the coat of arms for sure on my passport cover.

I had a look at world maps too and found it interesting the two perspectives - the one where Australia is in the centre of the world and the one where America is in the centre. I had not realised (not being a world traveller at all) how close they are to Europe!

De Bono (putting on which colour hat ) should be proud of me!

I think the kids would love the idea of a passport. My son did a unit on children from different cultures in year 3/4. The teacher began by sending all the students a plane ticket (mocked one up that looked like a Jetstar boarding pass) as a 'round trip' world ticket. It told them to arrive at 8.45 at room 'whatever' to begin their journey!
Passports were made up for each child (1/4 of an A4 page size) with a few blank pages inside and a dark blue card cover with an Australian coat of arms on the front. As they went to each country and read about the children there - the teacher gave out a 'stamp' to glue into their passport.

It was just printed out from the computer but I can't remember if they used a flag or a coat of arms or just an official looking stamp. The children kept a travel 'diary' which became their assessment piece.

They included maps and drawings, wrote diary entries about attractions etc and wrote postcards home as well as interesting facts. They used the national geographic kids website on the IWB http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/places/find/
and it was a fantastic and engaging unit.

Maybe you could find animal stamps that would relate to animals found in the countries you are visiting

What about using the Alison Lester book, 'Are we there yet?' with a focus on Australia. I've included a link that has a unit plan and a couple of other sites I've found. The last link is for use on Smart boards. http://www.penguin.com.au/educationcentre/pdf/teachers_notes/PDF/0670880671.pdf

The passport sounds like a fantastic idea!

As an alternative to stamps you could provide students with an image of the country and/or book that you've read that they can cut out and paste into their passport.

  • I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!
