ASPCA Day and Earth Day
by Kelly Schrage
(Horseheads, NY, USA)
On April 7, the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) will kick off The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.
In support of the kind and caring treatment of animals, my students are asked to wear ORANGE on Tuesday, April 7. (For more information on the ASPCA go to http://www.aspca.org/about-us/aspca-april/ )
In addition, April 22 is Earth Day. Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. As a class we talk a lot about reducing, recycling and reusing items to help keep our Earth (and community) healthy.
We also read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and discuss the importance of natural resources.
To help students make a real life connection to taking care of our Earth and its animals we collect USED items for our local SPCA. We focus on recycling and reusing items that can be found around the house. Things that we collect are used towels, blankets, sheets, shoe boxes, leashes, cat carriers, and newspapers.
It's a great way to start spring cleaning early ? recycle reusable items - and help out a wonderful cause in your community!
