Year 1 Telling the time

With a year one class we played What's the Time Mr Wolf - but instead of the wolf (myself) calling out 'It's one o'clock!" I used a clock with moveable hands.

Submitted by Jennifer
I am having a major sort out! Has anyone got any ideas for how to organise teaching theme resources?

I saw an interesting post on Pinterest the other day, showing a plastic, sandwich size, zip-lock bag that had had a piece of duct tape run along the base. The duct tape provided reinforcing that allowed holes to be punched through the bag for storage in a binder. I imagine you could run the tape down the side of larger zip-lock bags for a similar effect. This may not solve all your storage issues, but if there\'s just a few small games to go with a unit that\'s otherwise stored in a binder, it might help!

I was just thinking the other day that I needed some matching cards for numbers over 100 then today I came across the new parts of speech posters and thought I\'d check out the \"What\'s New\" section and there I found exactly what I had been wanting. Thank you so much for your wonderful resources. This is the first place I check when looking for resources and I\'ve been able to build a great collection since moving to the lower school grades last year. Thanks again!

What others are saying...
Have a look here for some cute printables to use for tablenames, groups and class decorations etc

In the past I have used the 'Walking through the jungle' theme for year 2 net and we wrote a 'What am I' for various jungle animals. We then had the children paint a large picture of each chosen animal, featuring the descriptors from their 'What am I?'. Lots of fun and makes a great display with the painting hanging up and the text displayed underneath.
As part of our unit on Africa, I would write a message to the students telling them what I had hidden and what to search for during the session. Previously I had bought some cheap binoculars from a toy shop.
The children were very excited about searching. Each day the animals were changed. The message was great to encourage reading using new sight words and picture clues if needed. e.g. I can see 4 elephants. Or Look for two zebras. I used the word cards from the word wall as another way of communicating.
Every day it was a task to look forward to and encourage talk and enthusiasm.
Hi
My Reception class will be doing a Unit on African Animals as we have Handas Surprise as an Accelerated Literacy Text. We also studied the book 'Mirror' Jeannie Baker this term as we went to an exhibit of her artwork from the book! This book is a double story of a boy in Sydney and a boy in Morocco. Definitely worth a look!
Cheers
Vicki
