*Welcome..
Well doesn't time fly?  We are at the end of January already, and this week all of our Aussie members would be up and running back to school for a new year.

I hope that your year has started well for you and that you a just a little bit excited about those new classes.

Having my children home during the holidays has been lovely, although it can be tricky trying to work and play at the same time.  Consequently, my time has been limited due to some serious 'playing', but we still managed to add some terrific new resources.

*Teaching Tip Time...

News Telling Time
When, Who, Where, What, Why & Feelings

News telling is a wonderful strategy for early primary children to build confidence and learn the relationship between speaking and listening.

I would include news telling for one term of the school year only, as it can become tedious to use this strategy all year.  There are other oral strategies which we used during the other terms.  (for example,  mystery bag oral descriptions, story retelling, and our winning teaching idea from this month would be an ideal oral strategy).

We would use the When, Who, Where, What, Why and Feelings framework for our news telling.

Depending on the ages of the children, we would plan our news using an A3 / A4 size planner.  For younger children, we drew pictures, added words for older children and just used word or note form for much older children.

We would talk about this framework a lot and of course use lots of modelling before it was implemented.

This could include brainstorming each category for examples of sentence starters - eg. On Saturday, last week, next Tuesday....

I have seen two ways in which the news telling sessions are implemented.

1. the individual news plans were part of the weekly group literacy activities.

2. the news plan were sent home with the children to plan their news with their parents.

Both seemed to work well.

Different ways of telling news can also make it more interesting.

  • formal (use news plan) , informal (spontaneous)

  • small group news

  • partner news

  • different news categories, sporting news, community news, family news, school news

Use our news telling charts and A4 plan to help.
