A very warm welcome to everyone, especially now that the weather is getting cooler! We were 'lucky' enough to go camping last weekend to the mountains. It was very cold but well worth it. My children had the chance to build a fire, and we sucked in the clear mountain air for 2 nights - extremely good for the soul. If you get the chance today - go for a walk outside and really really look at the amazing world around you - all the other 'stuff' just doesn't count! Anyway, enough contemplating - back to work! We hope you all had a great Easter break. Thanks again for all your terrific contributions and suggestions this month. We are gradually working our way through your suggestions. One of the suggestions was to make the concept books available with outlines of the pictures so that children can colour them in. We are working our way through the concept books and adding the option of picture outlines for each file. 'Thank You Mum' and 'What is Heavy, What is Light?' is our first example of this. Our charity drive is up and running. It was so very difficult to decide on which charity, as there are so many worthy causes both in our own country and overseas. We finally decided on 'Fred Hydes Building Schools in Bangladesh' charity. Fred is a retired gentleman from Queensland who is doing a wonderful job in Bangladesh. For every reviewed Teaching Tip and Your Teachers Zone Page contribution we donate $1 to Fred's schools. So far we have raised $11 - thank you to those who have sent in their tips. Let's keep them coming, every bit helps. Here's to an absolutely fabulous and inspiring May...... *Teaching Tip Time...2 little ones this month.. 'What Made You Happy Today?' I just love this idea.... Recently, I spent a lovely week with my sister and her 2 little cherubs aged 2 and 3. During dinner, their Father asked 'What made you happy today Carson?' Before we new it Carson was telling us all about his happy moments and he then promptly asked his little 2 year old brother - 'What made you happy today Eddie?' It was the cutest, sweetest thing - and before we all new it everyone around the table had to have a turn. We also included what made you sad? as well. Oh course the Teacher in me (it still lurks deep down in there somewhere!) started thinking what a wonderful way this would be to finish off the school day. A whole class sharing circle, or even small groups, would be ideal and a fantastic way for the littlies to learn about considering the feelings of others and understanding their own. _____________________________________________ 'Hanging Space' I came across this incredibly simple idea on one of my classroom jaunts. I am probably the only teacher who hadn't thought of this, but pop up a piece of string fairly high from one side of your room to the other, or up against a free wall (funny one - a free wall in K-3!) Now bulldog clip all of those piles of worksheets, hand-outs, parent newsletters, spare homework sheets, work to be finished piles, important notices etc. on to the string - all those things that you regularly need to put your hands on but regularly go missing as you pick them up and put them down a million times each day. Just make it high enough that you can reach, but so they are not in the way. I have seen this work so well - in particular, just near the classroom door, where papers need to be remembered to come and go. Hope this helps...Cheers
