100 Day Party

Submitted by Admin (11-10-2012)

At our school we have a 100 Day Party when the Kinders have been at school for 100 days. Starting on day 1 and using the 100 chart(either on IWB or wall chart-I use both!)we move a counter on the chart each morning until we get to 100. Great for familiarising children to the 100 chart, counting by 1, counting on to the next decade, counting by 10.

On the day the Kinder classes work in rotation with 100 Day activities, culminating in a party where we have 100 mini-cupcakes,100 balloons (blown up by Year 6 children)grouped into bunches of 10, drinks grouped in 10s, and a disco with children wearing their "100 day" hats.

Some of the rotation activities could be pacing out 100 steps, making hats with "100 Days in glitter" or collage for children to wear, grouping Teddy Counters, as a group graphing 100 Teddy Counters according to colour or size, painting or drawing what you like about school after 100 days, discussion about how children felt on their first day and how they feel now.

At the end of the party children receive a certificate to acknowledge their participation.

From day one of Kinder we put a coloured paddle pop stick in a decorated box each day, labelled 'How many days have we been at school?'
Once we have 10 sticks these are bundled so we learn to count the tens and the ones. When we have 10 bundles of 10 we have a 100 day party.

Highlight of last year's party was our Yr 6 buddies coming and making each child a 'costume' using a newspaper, sticky tape, staples and strips of crepe paper. There was a 30 min time limit and then we paraded down the red carpet. It was such a great day. We made a video of the parade and showed it in assembly.

We have done this at every school I have worked out! Don't worry about absences..its not for the kids' 100th day...its the 100th Day of SCHOOL.

It might be a silly question, but what do you do for the kids who haven't been there for 100 days? Do you just pretend that everyone has done 100 days?
I'm not knocking it. I think it's a great idea - I'm just thinking that with my kids, I have one who will have at least one day off a week and the others, he will only come half days...

  • One of the best ways to find children\'s strengths is to ask the other children. If you play the \"hot seat game\", where you ask the children to describe another, with no name given, just good things about them, you often learn all sorts of things that you didn\'t know were happening. Also I often get the child with a particular \"strength\" to go off and assist a buddy who needs help along those lines- makes for a very interesting conversation. After a while, everyone knows that ***** is good at blending, so they go and ask for help. Makes lots of smiles all over. what a clever woman you are to ask for strengths, when you yourself are feeling a little low. You need your own magic stick. It\'s one of those wands with glitter inside, when you shake it, you see the glitter feel happy and smile. Holding this stick many of my children have found the answer using the magic from the stick. Well done. Barbara.
